Tangle Time: Abukas

Picking today’s date in the #IntoberTangles2020 list by CZT Stephanie Jennifer, we find ourselves looking at Abukas by CZT CharKat. This is a new tangle for me, and it was fun to learn and share!!

Before we dug in, we took a look at CZT CharKat’s post where she shared her step outs, the story behind the tangle and some beautiful work using it. One thing that struck me in CharKat’s work, was the center of the pattern. In her step out, she leaves it empty, but as you see in her work, it can be filled however you like. I decided to deconstruct one of the centers and create step outs for it. You can see that here. OH! and the tangle I used around the center is called WUD (click for the step out).

One of the extra fun things about Zentangle® is the different results with the same instruction. It’s a beautiful testimony to how we are all unique and create so much beauty when we embrace our uniqueness and share it.

Tangle Time: Amarin and Tortuca!

In the spirit of Inktober, looking at the tangle recommended for today, Amarin, I decided that I needed to continue what I am calling my “planter phase” where I pair an organic tangle with something that could look like the outside of a decorative planter. I chose Tortuca to be the planter tangle. Both tangles are rewarding and easy! Great combination!! Click on the tangle names above to get to the stepouts and have some fun of your own.

Jake Parker created Inktober in 2009 as a challenge to improve his inking skills and develop positive drawing habits. It has since grown into a worldwide endeavor with thousands of artists taking on the challenge every year. Fellow CZT, Stephanie Jennifer has put together a challenge list for tanglers. Tangle Time: Struzzle!

As we move towards colder weather here in Michigan, I get to thinking about fun indoor activities such as doing puzzles. So why not create our own puzzle – with this super cool tangle, Struzzle, by Jo Newsham

This is a neat grid based tangle with tons of creative ways to have fun and put in your own unique touch. On the Tangle Time calls we explored different ways to shade it (I need to update the stepout now. :)) and even had fun adding a gem!

Tangle Time: Twing!

Add a bit of Twing to your Tangle! Wow, what a nice line/border tangle this is!!

A line or border tangle is one that is primarily just that one that goes in a line versus one that fills a space. Now, you could repeat it as we did last week with Zander and create something neat! You can also use this as a border, partial – or complete as you will see one of our tangler did just that in the photos below.

Tangle Time: PokeLeaf in the Zander

With the end of Summer approaching, I felt the need to do some Nature-y/Organic tangles. Picking an old favorite, PokeLeaf, and one I enjoyed but hadn’t used in a while, Zander.

In my mind, I had set out how I wanted to place these two tangles. Similar to times before where we had a weave type pattern and then an organic one growing out of it – like a planter. In the sessions, share the stepouts that I plan to explore so everyone can see them and form an idea of how they might want to place their string and tangles – or, they can follow along with me. Everyone works different and my aim to appeal to everyone. This is why some may look completely different. All are completely amazing!!!!

Zentangle®’s Waybop!

Waybop is such a fun tangle! To be able to draw interlocking rings, is amazing. We use one stroke, the curved line, and two techniques, auraing and hollibaugh. The results are fantastic!

Because I am not an artist, I found that I needed to add one step before the official Zentangle® stepout starts – I have to start out with very light dots before the seeds. If you remember Munchin, it’s like that except that the dots are specifically placed versus randomly placed. Click here for my stepout. Be on the lookout for a video from me on this. Sometimes it helps to talk through it.

Tangle Time: Well!

Well, getting caught up on the blog. Hope you are well!! On our last Tangle Time, we focused on the tangle Well – and what a fun time we had!!!

Another great grid tangle brought to us by the folks at Zentangle®. This one has SO MANY options. Some that we found by “accident”. hahaha! This one has quite a number of steps, but Well worth it! When you look at the stepout, if you stop at the 8th step you have the variation that I put in the last step (which I still need to redo – look at my work to see how to do those stripes better.) ALSO, this one has the challenge of having to flip/reverese/mirror the direction of the curved lines in the 3rd step in each grid box. If you end up with an oops, (Occasional Opportunity Presented Suddenly) just go with it. It will turn out neat in any case.

Just look at how different some of these turned out. The creativity here is inspiring!!

Tangle Time: Which way, Schway?

This week we found our inner Escher and explored the tangle, Schway.

This is another one of those, easy, but not easy tangles. Takes a little concentration but Oh what fun and Oh so many fun things can be done with this.

Tangle Time: Fun with Munchin!!

This week on Tangle Time we had two times the fun with the tangle Munchin! First we drew it in the traditional, Zentangle style and experimented with shading. Shading from the point and then from the baseline, and shading carefuly from both ends.

THEN, I threw everyone for a bit of a loop grabbed colored pens, pencils , whatever was handy and we let loose and had extra fun with this variation as it was presented by Molly Hollibaugh (Maria’s daughter) in a past Zentangle Project Pack. Here is her video.

Tangle Time: Flukes and Shattuck

This week on Tangle Time we had fun with the tangles Flukes and Shattuck. Flukes is nice in that it has a bit of a 3D effect, looking like scales or shingles (adding shading really makes them pop!!). Shattuck is a nice “nature-y” looking tangle. It’s simple, but challenging to do at the same time. (For me anyway. hahaha!)
